Menzies Aviation pilots AI-powered cargo technology at London’s Heathrow Airport
Teams will evaluate how automated cargo measurement, real-time visibility and build-up checks can improve data quality, operational efficiency and decision-making across the cargo handling process – from arrival through to aircraft loading.
As part of the first phase, Menzies is implementing CIND’s Dimensioner In-Motion, a system that automatically measures cargo as it moves through the warehouse. Without stopping or handling freight, the technology captures key information such as pallet size, weight, stackability and shipment references, providing accurate and consistent data at the earliest stage of cargo intake. This helps reduce manual input, limit errors and improve planning further downstream.
As part of the trial, Menzies is also piloting CIND’s ContourCheck during Unit Load Device (ULD) build‑up. The system creates a real‑time visual model of the cargo as it is being loaded onto a ULD and instantly checks it against the approved aircraft contour. This allows teams to identify potential contour or overhang issues early, supporting safer loading, better space utilisation and fewer last‑minute adjustments.
Together, these technologies are expected to support more efficient warehouse flows, improved load accuracy, better utilisation of ULD capacity and enhanced flight safety, while giving teams greater confidence in the quality and availability of cargo data.
The proof-of-concept deployment at London Heathrow is intended to help Menzies Aviation evaluate the potential for broader adoption across its cargo network, and support’s the company’s ongoing focus on operational excellence, digitalisation and continuous improvement.
Rory Fidler, Senior Vice President Cargo Technology, Menzies Aviation, said “Innovation is fundamental to how we are shaping the future of our cargo operations. This proof-of-concept deployment with CIND gives us the opportunity to test how reliable, real‑time data can transform the way we plan, load and manage cargo. The learnings from this pilot will help us assess the potential for wider application across our cargo network, supporting safer operations, smarter use of capacity and better decision‑making.”
Marcus Schelin, CEO of CIND, added: “Our solutions are proven and established in the market. Partnering with Menzies Aviation is an exciting and important step that reinforces our global rollout and our position as a market leader in automated measurement solutions for air cargo. This first phase deployment allows us to demonstrate real operational value while supporting safer, more efficient, and data-driven cargo handling.”
